The book And There Was Light tells the story of Jacques Lusseyran, a Frenchman who, though blind, had played an important role in the Resistance during the Nazi occupation. He was the leader of a Resistance unit, and whenever someone wanted to join the unit, Lusseyran would spend an hour alone with the applicant, chatting about innocent, unrelated subjects. Specifically, because he was blind, his other sensibilities had developed to a degree that enabled him to tell whether or not the applicant could be trusted. During the war, he passed on some forty people, and the only person he was unsure about turned out to be a traitor.

The story, real as it is, struck a cord of the Oedipus legend. Not being able to see may turn one into a more insightful human being.

In one episode in the book, Lusseyran writes about his childhood, about the first book his mother read to him after he became blind. The book was The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling, and it was in Braille.

In There’s a Rumble in the Jungle, a character named Jacques Lusseyran tells his story. But instead of following the autobiographical details of his life, he becomes the blind motion picture director. This blind director is working on an adventure film. The adventure takes place inside his head. His own twisted imagining of The Jungle Book is as far away as it can be from the Disney version. It is Lusseyran’s audio film told as a mix of real facts and the jungle in his imagination.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height="40px"][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_video link="https://vimeo.com/119401669" css=".vc_custom_1697624356511{background-color: #000000 !important;}"][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_column_text]Performers: Anna Mendelssohn, Markus Zett, Jaschka Lämmert, Peter Stamer

It is 1912. In his spacious apartment on the ground floor, the writer Karl Kraus is rehearsing the performance/reading of his new creation: Nestroy and Posterity. It is 2015, and in the three-bedroom apartment across the hall a couple, young/liberal/white, is making love. Above Kraus, in the small one-bedroom apartment that used to ‘host’ the servants in former times, a young woman in a sort of 1970 ideological determination is learning how to make a homemade bomb. It is the roof apartment in 2070. A recent Italian immigrant to the city is training in the art of Waltz with the help of an A.I. Dancing Machine. It is almost winter, all over the interlocking timelines, a month or two before Christmas, and Vienna is not yet dressed for the occasion.

In It’s Always Sunny in Vienna we tell the story of a single apartment building in Vienna. The inhabitants of the different apartments are characters from the past, the present, and the future Vienna. Some are real historical figures, while others are made up. The characters represent a kaleidoscopic picture of a city and culture that knew a lot of turmoil and drama over the years.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height="40px"][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_video link="https://vimeo.com/151587718"][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_column_text]Performers: Tim Breyvogel, Irene Coticchio, Magda Loitzenbauer, Jaschka Lämmert, Anna Mendelssohn, Markus Zett

It is virtually impossible to over-estimate Georges Méliès’ contribution to the art of film. His work stands alone and is as distinctive as that of all great geniuses. Morton Feldman was a big, brusque Jewish guy from Woodside, Queens—the son of a manufacturer of children’s coats. He worked in the family business until he was forty-four years old, and he later became a professor of music at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He died in 1987, at the age of sixty-one.

Imagine an apartment on the third floor, number 12, 98 m2. In 1970 a lesbian couple occupies the apartment. The couple lives in secret, it’s 1970 Vienna and the city is fairly conservative and not yet ready for same-sex couples. We move to 1990. The apartment is rented to a psychoanalyst who runs a successful practice. A chance encounter with one of the building’s residents leads to a therapy session. The resident is a woman in her late thirties and she talks to the analyst about her marital difficulties. We jump to 2016. A man in his early forties rents the place. He hires a call girl and asks her to dress like the character Princess Leia from the film Star Wars. A conversation starts when she arrives at his apartment.

In between the different scenarios/stories the apartment’s decor changes according to the specific style of the given time, and a narrator gives the viewers the historical context of the period presented in the scene.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height="40px"][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_video link="https://vimeo.com/224186550"][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_column_text]Performers: Susanne Gschwendtner, Anna Mendelssohn, Markus Zett, Isabella Händler

We also invited people we worked with over the years. The result was a big party on a run-down ship, Federico Fellini meets Herman Melville.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height="40px"][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_column_text]With: Anna Mendelssohn, Susanne Gschwendtner, Markus Zett, Isabella Händler, Michael Strohmann, Peter Stamer, Yosi Wanunu
