We work with the assumption that before a kid/young adult learns how to act, shoot a video, or edit a clip, he or she has to have something to say. Something that is truly theirs; not a copy of the art they consume, or a ‘text’ that was fed to them by well-meaning adults. We don’t discount craft; we just found out that if a kid/young adult finds his or her story/voice, they will find a way to realize it. Many kids/young adults know how to use a camera; however, the stories they tell are copies of the films, TV shows, and video games they see day in and out. The same can be said regarding kids/young adults acting, which often looks like just another version of the adult stages or performances. So, instead of working on a show as an end product, we spend time creating many “shows’ daily. We call it the story factory; which means, to us, a constant production of stories, ideas, abstract thoughts, movements, and talks with not so much emphasis on the ‘how’. At the end of the process, the body of materials we generate is immense; be it stories, theatre scenes, interviews, video clips, dances, and talks. It’s a dreamscape and a landscape, built from hope and danger. A frontier is a horizon, certainly, dim and distant; but it’s also an architecture of belief, a place where you need a muse as much as you need a navigator. Therefore, the one true thing about every frontier that seems concrete and immutable is that it does not last. Sooner or later, everything that makes it a frontier collapses into maps and charts and roads and cities, and it becomes a place where we all go and live. So in July of 1960, John F. Kennedy got up before an audience in Los Angeles, and he talked about the old frontier, the geographic one, the one that used to be right there by the Pacific, and he talked about a new one, and he stepped off into the geography of the uncharted imagination. “We stand today on the edge of a New Frontier,” he said. “The frontier of the 1960s. A frontier of unknown opportunities and perils. A frontier of unfulfilled hopes and threats… . The New Frontier of which I speak is not a set of promises. It is a set of challenges… . Can a nation organized and governed such as ours endure? That is the real question. Have we the nerve and the will?.. Are we up to the task? Are we equal to the challenge?” This new frontier was supposed to be cool and ironic, technocratic and rational, settled by scientists and thinkers, and theoreticians. Raumschiff Erde is a large size installation (14m x 8m) of Planet Earth’s geographical map. The installation’s main concern is the topic of the environment and the many ways the planet is affected by human behavior. The act of discovering the map is multi-layered and involves different ways of interacting, from an actual physical walk over the surface to a higher bird view of the map accompanied by sound, light, and video. The visitors will explore the map and find out facts, stories, images, video clips, and sounds from life on the planet.
